Why Switch?
Have you ever had God speak to you through something completely unexpected?
That happened to me just the other day. I was sitting in the waiting room at my local vets while my three Persian cats were having their pedicure (claws clipped.) As I waited, I picked up a magazine lying on the table.
At first glance it was simply an advert I noticed. But the more I looked at it, the more I thought… There’s a Gospel message in the ad.
Why Switch?
There Is Only One Saviour
Every day companies spend millions persuading us to switch products. They tell us one brand tastes better, lasts longer, performs better or is more reliable than the competition.
This veterinary advert caught my attention because its headline simply asks, “Why Switch?” Immediately my mind went somewhere entirely different.
The greatest question anyone will ever face is not whether they should switch dog food or cat food, insurance company or mobile phone provider.
The greatest question is this:
Have you switched from trusting yourself to trusting Christ?
The Bible repeatedly calls this ‘repentance’, a complete turning away from one kingdom or way of life and into another.
Jesus never invited people simply to improve their lives. He invited them to die to themselves and follow Him.
Taste Matters
The advert says:
Taste matters.
Immediately Psalm 34 came to mind. “Taste and see that the LORD is good.” (Psalm 34:8)
The world spends its life chasing another taste.
The taste of money. The taste of success. The taste of pleasure. The taste of popularity. The taste of power.
For a while these things satisfy. But only for a while. Like chewing gum, the flavour fades away. The soul begins searching again.
Jesus offers something entirely different.
He told a woman at a well: “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” (John 4:14) and the truth is that only Christ satisfies the deepest hunger of the human heart and quenches the inner thirst.
You don’t truly know Him by reading about Him. You know Him by coming to Him.
There really is only one who can forgive sin, reconcile us to God and give eternal life: that’s Jesus.
So, my recommendation is to taste him for yourself.
Compliance Counts
The second slogan in the advert reads:
Compliance counts.
That made me smile. Because, in our culture, nobody likes the word “compliance”.
- People want freedom without responsibility.
- Grace without repentance.
- Heaven without holiness.
- Salvation without surrender.
Yet Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15) – Obedience is not how we earn salvation. It is the evidence that salvation has already happened.
A healthy tree naturally produces healthy fruit. Likewise, a heart transformed by Christ begins to desire what pleases Him, and it shows outwardly. That’s why the Scripture tells us, “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:20)
Christianity is not merely believing facts about Jesus.
It is following Him.
Daily.
- Sometimes joyfully.
- Sometimes sacrificially.
- But always faithfully.
No Imitations
The final statement on the advert is perhaps the most powerful.
No imitations.
How true that is spiritually.
There are countless false and fake substitutes for the real Christ.
- A cultural Jesus.
- A political Jesus.
- A therapeutic Jesus.
- A prosperity Jesus.
- A motivational Jesus.
- A social media Jesus.
Then there are the religious Jesus’ found in many churches and religious organisations.
- A Jesus who never speaks about sin.
- A Jesus who never mentions judgement.
- A Jesus who asks nothing of us.
But none of these are the Jesus revealed in Scripture. Paul the Apostle warned the Corinthian believers that people would come preaching: “another Jesus.”
That warning is just as relevant today.
The real Christ is both Lion and Lamb.
- He is full of mercy.
- He is full of truth.
- He welcomes sinners.
- He commands repentance.
- He offers forgiveness.
- He demands lordship.
There is no imitation that can save. Only the genuine Son of God.
Why Switch?
The advertisement continued and asked why anyone should change.
The Gospel answers with one word.
Because.
- Because sin separates us from God.
- Because death is certain.
- Because eternity is real.
- Because Christ died in our place.
- Because He rose again.
- Because salvation is found nowhere else.
You don’t simply add Jesus onto an already comfortable life.
- You exchange death for life and darkness for light.
- You emerge from bondage into true freedom.
- You find forgiveness replaces condemnation.
- And wonderfully, the vacuum of hopelessness vanishes in the revelation of eternal hope.
The Greatest Decision You’ll Ever Make
One day every advert you’ve ever seen will be forgotten. And every product will become obsolete. And every possession will eventually belong to someone else.
But one decision will remain forever.
What did you do with Jesus Christ? Let me read to you what the Bible says regarding this question:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3: 16-18)
The Gospel isn’t asking you to upgrade your lifestyle. It is calling you to surrender your life.
The invitation is still open.
- The cross still stands.
- The tomb is still empty.
- The Saviour still calls.
So perhaps the question isn’t simply…
Why switch?
Perhaps the real question is…
Why would you not? Let me finish with a very relevant scripture.
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
