Unblocking The Wells.

Scripture Foundation: Genesis 26.

Introduction.

Let’s keep this grounded and real.

There are seasons in the Christian life where you’re still believing, still loving Jesus, still showing up… but the flow just isn’t the same. And if we’re honest, it can feel confusing, because on the outside you look “fine”.

  • You’re still attending.
  • Still serving.
  • Still doing what you’ve always done.

But inside, something feels restricted — like the tap has been turned down, or the well has been covered over.

  • Prayer feels like effort. Not impossible, not pointless, just… heavier than it used to be. You sit down to pray and your mind races. You start well, then drift. Or you manage a few sentences and then you’re stuck. You’re not suddenly faithless — you’re just finding prayer takes more “digging” than it did before.
  • Joy feels muted. Not absent but dulled. You still know the truth. You still believe God is good. Yet the emotional brightness feels like it’s behind a thin curtain. You can still smile, but it doesn’t always reach your spirit in the same way.
  • Your heart feels more guarded. You’re not cold, but cautious. You’re not bitter, but protecting yourself. Maybe you’ve been let down. Maybe you’ve been misunderstood. Maybe you’ve carried too much for too long — and without intending to, you’ve started to brace yourself.
  • Your boldness to speak about Jesus feels turned down. You still love the Lord. Still care about people. Still believe the Gospel matters. But you hesitate more than you once did.
  • “Is now the right moment?”
  • “Will I say it wrong?”
  • “Will I come across weird?”

And suddenly, what used to feel natural now feels like a mountain.

That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve failed. Many believers are far too quick to condemn themselves. Sometimes a season requires attention, not accusation.

Pressure and Carrying Too Much.

  • Living under pressure. Family pressure. Work pressure. Health pressure. Financial pressure. Emotional pressure. Spiritual pressure. Pressure squeezes life if it isn’t regularly returned to the Lord.
  • Carrying more than you realise. You don’t feel dramatic stress — just tired. Tiredness often means you’ve carried loads never meant to be carried alone. You’ve been strong, reliable, and available for others — and didn’t notice your own well running low.
  • Earth building up in the well. Not wickedness. Not scandal. Not collapse. Just earth — the slow build-up of everyday life.
  • Distractions
  • Disappointments
  • Emotional clutter
  • Unprocessed things
  • Prayers you meant to pray but never did

Over time it settles, like soil in a well, until the flow is restricted. The well doesn’t look broken — just blocked. Prayer is not only about asking. It’s about noticing where we are, naming what’s real, and letting the Lord restore us from the inside out.

Genesis 26: A Mirror.

Genesis 26:15: The Philistines stopped up the wells, filling them with earth.

Isaac is blessed. He prospers. Things grow. Then opposition turns up. They don’t just challenge comfort — they target the source. In a dry land you can survive many things — but not long without water. Spiritually, it’s the same.

  • You can push through challenges, but when the flow of life with God is restricted, everything feels harder than it should.

Modern-Day “Philistines”

Not people groups. Not politics. A biblical pattern — anything that chokes access to prayer, the Word, joy, courage, and overflow.

Common Blockages.

Slow drift.

Not rebellion — delay. “Tomorrow.” “Later.” Patterns form. Pathways develop. Suddenly you’re living further from the well.

Offence and unforgiveness.

Quiet hurts. Comments. Moments. Disappointments. Left unprocessed, they cap the heart.

Fear of people.

You still believe, but begin editing yourself. Courage shrinks. Witness dulls.

Noise and distraction.

So much input. Little space. The well isn’t empty — it’s crowded.

Weariness.

Giving out without refilling. Not sin — depletion. Eventually the soul says, “I can’t keep doing this.”

Disappointment turning into cynicism.

You still believe — but stop expecting. Hope dims.

Substitutes.

Comforts that numb but don’t restore. They distract, delay, but don’t heal.

Esek, Sitnah, Rehoboth

  1. Esek — Contention (Genesis 26:20)
The “why is this a fight?” season. Returning to prayer feels contested.
  2. Sitnah — Opposition (Genesis 26:21)
The “again?” season. Resistance continues. Not a sign to stop — a sign to persist.
  3. Rehoboth — Room (Genesis 26:22)
God makes space. Room to breathe. Room to pray. Room to hope again.

Difficulty doesn’t mean failure. Sometimes it’s part of reopening what was blocked.

Wells Are for Others Too.

  • Rebekah meets guidance at a well (Genesis 24:10–27)
  • Jacob meets Rachel at a well — stone and all (Genesis 29:1–14)
  • Jesus meets a woman at a well and makes her a witness (John 4)

Prayer:

Not pressure. Not performance. Just overflow.

  1. “Lord, where is my well blocked?”
  2. “What earth has filled it?”
  3. “What have I normalised that You want to remove?”
  4. “What fear has silenced me?”
  5. “What offence has capped me?”
  6. “What weariness has drained me?”
  7. “What distraction has dulled me?”
  8. “What substitute have I been sipping instead of drinking from You?”

Take one question. Sit with it. Let grace do its work.

“Lord Jesus, I bring You my well. Show me what’s choking it and give me grace to clear it. Steady me in Esek. Strengthen me in Sitnah. Lead me into Rehoboth. Make me a spring again — so others can drink. Amen.”
