The old Beatles song lyrics say “Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday. Suddenly I’m not half the man I used to be There’s a shadow hangin’ over me. Oh, yesterday came suddenly”.
These words typify the experience of many as they awake in the morning – Perhaps even this very morning for some.
Reinhard Bonnke said “Today, “Yesterday” knocks on our door, telling us about “Tomorrow”. The glorious truth is though that “As Children of God, redeemed by the blood of the lamb” we know who holds tomorrow. We are assured and should be confident in the declaration of the Scripture that says “I Am the Lord and I change not” (Malachi 3:6) and “Yesterday, today and tomorrow – Jesus is the same” (Hebrews 13:8) is a living moment by moment reality for each of us.
Yesterday… however, with all its trials, troubles and complexities is still true. These “unprecedented days” when “old norms have become new norms” can excite fear and trepidation in our hearts. But! He says to us “Fear Not” and He does do 365 times (once for every single day if the year.
If we are concerned about Tomorrow and are blinded by Today – Remember, that “We live by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
- Walking by faith and not by sight requires us to go to places we do not know, one that God will reveal as we walk in obedience.
- Walking by faith means that we continue to cling to the dreams God has planted in our hearts, even if they seem to preposterous to believe any more.
- Walking by faith requires a strong determination to follow God’s plan regardless what life throws our way.
- Walking by faith means we have the courage to stand up for the hurting, broken, and downtrodden, to face death ourselves if need be for the good of others.
It means practically living in the Today God has chosen for us.
So many are overly concerned about Tomorrow and we talk about “making a living” nothing too wrong in that but what is to be avoided is “Failing in Living whilst we succeed in – making a living” – Jesus has the answer for that when He says – “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).
I believe God is set about raising up a remnant of believers, those he knows will be obedient. He is definitely looking for those with clean hands and a pure heart, those who will choose obedience even if it costs them everything this world has to offer.
Let’s keep in mind what God has previously done before indicates what will happen next – none of the nonsense in a song commonly sung that say – God has never failed me yet – encouraging us to entertain the thought that there is always a chance He will.
God has a proven record of accomplishment so we can rest the weight of our lives upon Him. He is the sovereign God and if He could fail, He would cease to be God and the Universe would cease to be.
“He who has begun a good work in us will complete it” (Philippians 1:6). Let’s remember “This is the day the Lord has made; lets rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24).
